One of our peach trees has finally brought forth fruit! We are so excited as these are our first peaches (we planted the trees three years ago). They are a little small, but we are happy to have any at... Continue Reading →
I figured it must be time to harvest the garlic when I noticed they had all disappeared into a sea of weeds and grass. Sure enough, upon closer inspection, it was time! I was a bit shocked how successful I... Continue Reading →
We tend to cook more Asian food than other ethnicities. Right now the garden is bursting with several different kinds of lettuces that need to be eaten. So, we decided to make tuna and salad the Asian way. Salad rolls... Continue Reading →
We've started picking the mulberries. Our ginormous mulberry tree is fully loaded. The first fruits were made into mulberry scones this morning. Here they are, those yummy mulberries. Yes, the little green stems are soft and fully edible - we... Continue Reading →
We have a hankering for sourdough pizza and breadsticks, so it's time to wake up my Creature. I keep my Creature in the fridge and bring it out when I'm ready to make a loaf of sourdough or pizza/breadstick dough.... Continue Reading →
I've really been having donut cravings and also wanted to try a new recipe out of the new cookbooks my brother gave me for Christmas. I decided to make Darkmoon Doughnuts from the World of Warcraft New Flavors of Azeroth... Continue Reading →
Sometimes you just gotta have an iced latte even in the middle of winter. My rheumatologist recently changed my meds and now I feel like I have cotton mouth, I'm nauseated, and I'm desperately thirsty all the time. (Hopefully these... Continue Reading →
I've been busy making candy, kumquat pies, and cookies like crazy for the neighbors and coworkers. (I'm also behind on blogmas as I'm sure you've noticed!) I've never made divinity before, much less remember ever consuming any, so I have... Continue Reading →
Today is the Solstice, which means we are in the backstretch! I'm thrilled about longer days and more sunshine! Solar powered here. I love it when the planet starts tilting back towards the sun again. Spring is also just around... Continue Reading →
I don't know how the rest of you handle pumpkin harvest, but I'm really overwhelmed! Who even eats this much pumpkin?! TOO many pumpkins! I don't want to waste any of the Jarrahdale pumpkins that I grew, but after baking... Continue Reading →
Experimenting to see if I can ripen these green tomatoes. They are all pretty small. It's maddening because it was either too hot, too dry, or too cold for tomatoes this year, and I planted them 30 days late! Anyways,... Continue Reading →
Oh no, what have I done to myself?! Over the weekend the Husband and I went and picked apples at an orchard a few miles away from our farm. We picked a whole bushel (an ENTIRE bushel)! So, I'm committed... Continue Reading →
Here is my latest harvest. I've been getting something akin to this when I pick a couple times per week. The question is how to do it justice? Today, the tomato worm "massacre" was worse than normal as I haven't... Continue Reading →
What's in season right now? Depends on what you planted, what's growing, and what's native. Right now it's mulberry, collards, and onion season! So, I will be whipping up a mulberry crumble and some collards and black-eyed peas! We are... Continue Reading →
I wanted burgers for dinner, but I was out of hamburger buns. So, instead of running to the grocery store, I just made some buns using Prairie Homestead's recipe. These are so good and are fast and easy to make!... Continue Reading →
We don't eat much takeout because we are way too far off the beaten track. The closest fast food is NOT worth it. Naturally, we haven't been dining out over the last 15 months either. Hence, we often get stumped... Continue Reading →
I cleared the summer weeds and grass out of my low tunnel and planted a fall garden on September 18. The tunnel is roughly 25 feet long and sporting 6 mil poly. I thought I'd take you for a tour and show you how things are growing!
I learned to make pancit from the Chamorro people while we were stationed in Guam. There was always a huge lecture about which noodle to use, and the winner was always rice vermicelli. No one wanted pancit (canton) with thick noodle, it had to be thin!
We lived on Guam for 3 years before we got out of the U.S. Navy; it was the Husband's second tour on Guam. One of the recipes I instantly loved was Kadun Kadu and everytime I can get my hands on bok choy, I'm almost sure to make it.
Oh, how I miss the South! So, the only other thing I can do to keep from being homesick is cook Southern food, especially since we're up here in this bleak and bland land they call Kansas. (We haven't been impressed with Midwestern casseroles.)
Okay, I'm opinionated about instant pots and air fryers. I'm anti-instant pot, but I'm on my way to being converted to an air fryer believer. (The jury is still out until I've attempted egg rolls in the air fryer.) I will note that I would never have purchased an air fryer, but I did receive one as a Christmas gift from my kitchen-gadget-loving mother.
Typically, anything I'm looking for isn't even on sale, and anything I'm looking for most likely can't be purchased locally either. I also like avoiding indoor and outdoor traffic, fist fights in parking lots, and the flu.
I love smoked salmon at Christmas...by itself, on crackers or toast, for breakfast or lunch, even with green eggs, Sam, I am.
Merry Christmas Eve! There isn't anything like being snowed in curled up by the tree and fireplace in a fluffy blanket with a hot peppermint mocha. I don't need to run out and go through a line to order one, I can make it right here at home. I am my own barrista!
Well, I've gone and done it again; I've made a new tradition or two. This year I really wanted to try a bunch of new recipes and make them my own, and so far two of them are really big hits! I have more to make, but I've already made rum/bourbon balls and pumpkin seed brittle.
